FME - Data Modeling and Transformation

FME - Data Modeling and Transformation

FME (Feature Manipulation Engine) is a powerful and flexible tool for the professional processing and integration of geospatial data. It enables the efficient translation, transformation, and automation of data flows—regardless of format or system.

FME supports over 400 GIS and CAD data formats (vector and raster), web services, databases (spatial and non-spatial), and 3D data. In this process, the data objects (features) are first converted into a neutral, internal format. This allows data to be edited and transformed regardless of its original format and then exported to any target format—ready for immediate use in common GIS or CAD software.

FME Form (Desktop)

FME Form consists of various standalone components. The two main components are:

  • Workbench: Creation and Management of Data Processes
  • Data Inspector: Data Visualization and Analysis
FME Workbench

The FME Workbench is the central authoring tool for defining data flows and transformation processes.

With its intuitive, visual interface, complex data processes can be created quickly and efficiently. Data from a wide variety of sources can be integrated, transformed, and transferred to new target systems.

By using so-called transformers, it is possible to:

  • Data can be filtered, combined, and modified in a targeted manner
  • Attributes can be added or modified
  • external data sources can be integrated

With over 500 available functions, the Workbench offers maximum flexibility for complex data integration.

FME Data Inspector

The FME Data Inspector is used to visualize and validate data—regardless of format.

It allows vector and raster data to be displayed before, during, and after processing. This makes it easy to quickly understand and verify data structures and content.

Typical applications:

  • Fault Analysis and Quality Assurance
  • Analysis of Unknown Data Structures
  • Visual monitoring of transformation processes
  • Detailed inspection of geometries (e.g., coordinates of individual objects)

FME Flow (Web)

FME Flow is a platform for automating data integration and transformation. While FME Form Workbench is used to create processes, FME Flow ensures that these:

  • be executed automatically (e.g., on a schedule)
  • made available to other users via a website
  • can be integrated into existing systems (e.g., via APIs or web services); see, for example, SHOP+
Key Features
Automation

Workflows can be executed on a schedule or in response to specific events, for example:

  • every day at 2 o'clock
  • when new data is received
  • triggered by external systems, e.g., via email
Delivery as a Service

Data processes can be published as web services:

  • Download services (e.g., data exports)
  • Transformation and Data Validation Services
  • Real-time queries via API
Collaboration

Multiple users can access processes and data centrally:

  • Role and Permission Management
  • Web interface for easy use, e.g., SHOP+
  • Real-time queries via API
Monitoring & Control
  • Monitoring of ongoing processes
  • Logging
  • Error Analysis and Reporting
